Karlsruhe, Modena

The international exchange project CULT, a joint initiative of the UNESCO Creative Cities of Media Arts Karlsruhe and Modena and co-financed by the European Union, connects cultural heritage and media art in the context of sustainable development. From October 2024 to September 2025, the project promoted intercultural dialogue and demonstrated how media art can serve as a creative tool for fostering a shared European identity.

In spring 2025, 25 citizens, artists, and creatives from Karlsruhe and Modena had the opportunity to engage in direct exchange. In April, a group from Karlsruhe traveled to Modena, and in May, participants from Modena had the chance to visit Karlsruhe. The goal of these visits was to explore, through dialogue between the cities, ways to make media art accessible in the urban space and, ultimately, to develop routes to key media art sites in both cities.

CULT aims not only to deepen intercultural dialogue on Europe’s cultural heritage but also to encourage citizens’ direct participation in democratic and cultural life. Media art serves as a tool to develop and experience creative perspectives on a sustainable European identity. The project vividly demonstrates how cultural exchange and artistic innovation can go hand in hand, generating new impulses for a vibrant, open, and connected European society.
