The SCHLOSSLICHT-SPIELE Light Festival 2023 returns from August 16

The SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELE Light Festival Karlsruhe enters its new season, led by the motto “Hoffnungshorizonte. Dawn of Devices” from August 16 to September 17, 2023 to once again illuminate the palace façade with exciting projection mappings.

The motto has been chosen by the late Peter Weibel, former curator of SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELE and artistic director of the ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, to signify the importance of progress of devices for human civilisation, whether these devices are analogue or digital. The motto is taken up, among others, by “Cluster Kollektiv” with their show „For headlights crave hindsight too“, in which their artwork poses the question of how a future can be designed in which people and algorithms share spaces. The attempt at an answer is given from the perspective of a self-driving car. Combining the aesthetics of LIDAR sensors, glitch art and an electronic soundtrack this contribution reflects the beauty of error and malfunction.

Bridging the gap between worlds

The Fox, The Folks from Indonesia, expands the horizon of Karlsruhe as UNESCO Creative City of Media Arts with their artwork „Bhinneka Express“as it gives an intercultural perspective on social change and cohesion, as the title is a reference to the Indonesian national motto “Bhinneka Tunggal Ika”, meaning “Unity in Diversity”.

Another special act, combining the analogue world with the digital is “Hands-on” by Karlsruhe based media artist Jonas Denzel who extends his popular show into a new format. The projection mapping is not only limited to the palace façade and expands over the palace court, enclosing the audience entirely.
