UNESCO City of Media Arts at art karlsruhe 2025
art karlsruhe 2025 will once again provide a stage for national and international artists. As a UNESCO City of Media Arts, Karlsruhe presents itself in Hall 3 with a display that offers insights into the work of the office and features a work of media art created especially for the art fair.
This year, the UNESCO City of Media Arts’ presentation is entitled The Future is Today. The focus is on artistic approaches that explore the interface between humans, technology and nature. The interactive artwork Shape Shifter by Alex Besta and Felix Seelos, which was specially developed for art karlsruhe 2025, was selected as part of an open call for entries. The call was for works that open up innovative perspectives on sustainability and digital transformation.
The installation shows a transition between the real and the digital world. The portal stands for the connection between these two areas, which are constantly interacting with each other. The movements of the visitors activate the artwork: walking through the portal creates a brief exchange between presence and digital change.
Sustainability plays a central role not only in terms of content, but also in the implementation of the artwork. Regional materials and energy-efficient technologies were used specifically to minimize the ecological impact. The modular design allows the work to be reused in future projects.
The realization of the work was made possible by the support of the Werner Stober Foundation.
