Face of the Universe – Exhibition in Kosice, Slovakia

Tatsuru Arai, a composer and programmer from Japan who lives and works in Berlin, comes to Košice as part of the European Media Art Platform (EMAP). From September to October 2023, Arai, together with the Košice artist Boris Vaitovič, will work on the production of a site-specific multi-genre art work titled “Face of the Universe” which will be performed as part of the this year’s Art & Tech Days festival.

Two artists will document the digital shapes of flowers in Kosice and use artificial intelligence to recreate them. Creating a way to experience part of the essence of the universe through images and sound, is the collaborative artistic duo’s vision of an artwork that allows for a better understanding of human perception and cognition. This work will therefore also mediate communication between human and artificial intelligence.

Tatsuru Arai received his Bachelor’s degree in composition from Tokyo College of Music and has studied composition, computer programming and multimedia in Berlin. His main artistic theme is the integration of classical compositions into new technology. He works on the concept of Hyper Serial Music, an algorithm of music generated by technologies such as artificial intelligence. He has performed at Kinetica Art Festival (London), Tanztage (Berlin), Flow Festival (Helsinki Finland), CTM Transmediale Festival (Berlin), etc.

Boris Vaitovič‘s artistic work deals with the relativization of established schemes of thinking and their visual representations. Theoretically, he studies the historical connection between science and art and the overlaps of these tendencies into the present. He has been presenting his work in galleries and media festivals at home and abroad.

Supported using public funding by Slovak Arts Council. Slovak Art Council is the main partner of the project. The residence is co-funded by the Creative Europe EU.

The residency of the artist Tatsuru Arai was established within the European Platform for New Media Art (EMAP), of which Creative Industry Košice is a member.

The opening of the exhibition is on 19.October 2023,  18:00-20:00, Kunsthalle, Rumanova 1, Kosice, Slovakia.
