The SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELE Karlsruhe will return from August 18, 2022

The SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELE Karlsruhe, with worldwide appeal, will return from August 18, 2022 under the motto “music4life” and will light up the façade of the Karlsruhe Baroque Palace.

Prof. Peter Weibel, curator of SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELE Karlsruhe and artistic director of the ZKM | Zentrum für Kunst und Medien Karlsruhe, chose the fitting motto “music4life” for the upcoming season. “The blues arose on and thus originated in the fields where slaves performed arduous labor: Music helped them to endure this life of exploitation. Songs therefore serve to compensate for the deepest suffering and yet at the same time are an expression of the highest joy – music is able to make an unbearable life tolerable. Music is joy of life. It is religion for the ears, because it opposes truth and beauty to the joyless present, like an aesthetic promise of salvation, which is also redeemed in a real epiphany”, says Prof. Peter Weibel. “It can thus become the gateway to consciousness-expanding ecstasy in an intoxication without chemistry, all by its enjoyment alone”.

BBBank-Newcomer-Preis
In 2021, the BBBank Newcomer Award in Projection Mapping had its premiere and received a great response. In 2022, the ZKM Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe and KME Karlsruhe Marketing and Event GmbH will again present the international award, which is sponsored by BBBank eG. After the successful start last year, the second edition of the BBBank Award enables the implementation of a total of three new concepts: The winner was Atelier v3 from France. The shows by Dortmund artist Leonie Oridt and the Spanish artist couple Hotaru Visual Guerrilla will also be realized and performed for the first time at Karlsruhe Castle.

UNESCO City of Media Arts as a resonating space for media art
This year’s edition will take place from August 18 to September 18, 2022. The 170-meter-wide façade of Karlsruhe’s baroque palace will become an oversized canvas for impressive projection mappings by internationally renowned media artists as well as a stage for local up-and-coming talent. Beyond the palace facade, the SCHLOSSLICHTSPIELE Light Festival will turn the entire UNESCO City of Media Arts into a resonating space for media art with diverse installations at various and changing locations in public space, bringing together high-quality modern art with the diversity of the population in a unique event.
